A Different Kind Of Christmas - August 30, 2009

It may seem a bit early to be talking about Christmas but I am writing you about a matter that is close to my heart because I believe it is near God’s heart, and it has to do with Christmas this year.  Every day people all around the world die from a lack of clean water.  Those of us who live in the United States take for granted that we can simply turn on a tap and have water in our homes to drink, bathe, and do dishes, laundry, cook, and so many other things.

Can you imagine waking up today and not knowing if you will have any water to drink, and knowing bathing would be entirely out of the question?  Can you imagine watching your children dehydrate in front of you and not be able to do anything about it?  Many people in the world don’t have to imagine because it happens to them every day.

Now think of this. Americans spend $450 billion dollars every Christmas.  Did you know that only $10 billion dollars would supply the whole world with clean water? I want to encourage all of you to visit this web site http://www.adventconspiracy.org  and watch the 2 minute video on what you can do to help bring change this Christmas. It is not asking you for money, just to think about giving more PRESENCE and less PRESENTS.

Let’s put our heads together and think about what God would have us do this year. I personally am available for fund-raiser concerts for any churches/organizations/neighborhoods that would be serious about making Christmas different this year. Let’s think and pray about what God would have us do.

Blessings,

Rick L. James

Successful Concert Promotion Tips - March 18, 2009

Thinking of promoting Rick L James in concert, but don't have a clue as to how to start or when to start? Maybe the following information will get you started in the right direction. If you need to talk, feel free to call us at 937-206-1146. We'll be happy to discuss the ins and outs of concert promotion with you.

Tips on Successful Concert Promotion

Word of Mouth

1. The most important thing you can do is to start a "word of mouth" campaign immediately.

2. Get on the phone and call as many churches as you can and ask them to put the concert on their calendars. Ask if you can send posters to put up in their church to advertise the concert. THIS IS VERY EFFECTIVE AND HELPS GET THE BUZZ GOING. DO THIS RIGHT AWAY. The support of churches and youth pastors is vital. Call them, bug them, and mail them!

3. In the meantime, you want to have all your posters and flyers printed including a picture of Rick, stating time, date location, and ticket price. Send them to the churches you have already called. You will also need the flyers to send to a mailing list of previous concert attendees, churches and bookstores. This leads us to the next step, which is bulk mailing. This is the lifeblood of a successful concert.

The Promotional Countdown
14 weeks prior to the concert.

1. Make arrangements to do a direct mail campaign. You should try to mail to 25 - 1000 churches and individuals in order to saturate the market.

2. It is vital that your mailings arrive at least six weeks prior to the concert. When sending a mailing of this size you can get a bulk rate discount. Use your churches non-profit permit to get the lowest postal rate possible. You must give the post office substantial amount of time to ensure your mailing arrives on the determined schedule, remember, bulk mail usually takes at least three weeks to be fully delivered.

3. Set up ticket sales at bookstores and churches. List them on your promotional materials, inform all outlets that you will pick up the receipts and excess tickets no later than the day before the concert. Inform your stores that even if they sell all their allotted tickets, UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should they tell their customers the concert is sold out unless you personally tell them so.

4. Have your tickets printed. (Often the cost of this will be absorbed by a local business in exchange for using their logo on the back. You might even work a deal whereby the ticket stub is used as a discount coupon for their customers.)

5. Contact the local Christian radio station about advertising. Get rates and ask for discounts and special promotion policies. Explore all public service announcements

12 weeks prior to the concert

Distribute all promotional materials and tickets to outlets. Be sure to get receipts and carefully log ticket dispersal so a proper accounting can easily be made when you settle.

6 weeks prior to the concert

1. Recruit or hire crew to help with concert (load-in, ushers, ticket takers, load-out).

2. Send announcements to all free publications (activities calendars, church bulletins, newspapers, radio, TV, cable shows, schools, youth programs, etc.).

3. Your mailing should have arrived by this time. Check with people on your list to see when they received theirs.

4 weeks prior to the concert

1. Start Christian radio advertising. You should buy 60-second spots to run four times a day Monday through Friday for at least four weeks prior to the concert. Also, have the station do a ticket give-away (about 10 pairs per station) and offer tickets to the station employees.

2. Artists radio interviews should be scheduled and approved by this time.

3. Make arrangements for counseling materials to be available and plans for follow-up counseling. Check with local pastors who might be available for the evening or to disciple and counsel as part of your follow-up efforts.

3 weeks prior to the concert

1. Send press releases to the religion and entertainment editors of all local newspapers. Keep them short and to the point with a name and number to call for more information

2. Check tickets every three days. Redistribute tickets if necessary. No outlet should be allowed to run out of tickets if other outlets still have them.

The week of the concert

1. Be sure that all ticket monies and/or tickets are picked up from the outlets no later than the day prior to the concert. This will give you enough time to make an accounting of all tickets sold at advance and group rates. Group rates will not be applicable at the door nor should any tickets not already paid for be held at the door. It is not uncommon for people to call ask you to hold 30 tickets, and then not show up or appear with just a few people.

2. If you have not already discussed arrival times and last minutes details with Rick or his road manager, call him to confirm appropriate arrangements.

3. Be sure to have hotels reserved and prepaid in the artist’s name. There is often confusion at the desk so be sure that artist’s name is correctly spelled out, and if possible, a confirmation number is assigned and given to the road manager.

4. Have meals or food money (per Diems) arranged.

The day of the concert

1. Be sure that your crew will be there at the pre-determined time. The hall manager should have the building open and ready for set-up

2. Brief ushers and staff on their duties at least two hours before concert time. Photographs and Video Cameras Are permitted but Rick asks that the photos be shared with him on on Facebook, Myspace, of Email rickjames@rickjamesmusic.net for grassroots promotional purposes.

3. Meet with Rick or road manager to cover details on set-up and load out as well as sound check, etc.

4. Have tables set up at the rear of the auditorium and several people available to help with sales of records and T-shirts etc.

5. Have an expense record sheet completed (door sales can be added following the concert) and receipts on hand so you can settle up quickly if percentages are involved.

6. Meal(s) for artists and crew

7. Prayer time with artists, crew and counselors usually takes place an hour or so prior to the concert. Doors usually open to the public 30 to 45 minutes before concert time

8. Pass out mailing list cards to get the name and address of all that attended so you can send flyers to them in the future.

After the concert

1. Please be sure that enough crewmembers are present to help artists with load out

2. Send thank you notes to all volunteers and counselors

3. Pay all your bills

Other Important Promotional Ideas

1. Pass out flyers at other Christian concerts that are before your concert

2. Get local business to sponsor the concert by putting their name on all advertising in exchange for cash or free hotel rooms, etc.

3. Telemarketing (calling every church) is free and very effective

Other Facets of Effective Concert Promotion

Research: Always asks questions, gather information, meet people learn more about your market.
Quantity: Enough has to be done to let all potential attendees know of this event. Many avenues must be pursued to make sure no stone is left unturned.
Frequency & Distribution: If you wait until the last six days to bombard the market, it is too late. People plan their "free time" weeks and months ahead. Must give your audience plenty of advance notice.

Back from Africa - September 25, 2008

Hello my friends,
I want to thank you for all of the love and prayers that you lifted up to God on behalf of my ministry trip to Africa. From the beautiful landscape beneath the Ngong Hills to the heartbreaking poverty in the community of Kibera, I believe God led every step of the journey.

Every time I preached, played music, taught, and fellowshipped I sensed the closeness of the Lord with us. He people of Nairobi are a beautiful and wonderful people. Their smiles can light up the darkest room and I believe I formed lifelong friendships with many of them. I can't wait to go back again if the Lord provides the opportunity.

Now that I am back I am beginning to add more dates to my tour schedule and would love to now only share in my usual concert ministry but would love to share about what God is doing in Kenya. Well, I am going to keep this Email brief since I am still trying to get over my jetlag, just wanted to share my gratitude and joy for a renewing trip to Africa.

BTW, if you would like to see pictures from my trip they are all posted at www.myspace.com/rickjamesmusic.

Africa, Day 5 - September 10, 2008

Hello everyone,
I am writing you from Africa Nazarene University in Nairobi Kenya.
This has been a really amazing experience for me, and I have nearly
two weeks left here in Africa.

On the positive side, I have met so many wonderful people, played
music with two different worship bands, fed giraffes, walked among a
family of baboons, shared morning devotional music with the
maintenance department, been to BUSY downtown Nairobi, and played
cards and fellowshipped with some incredible Africa college guys,
have spent a lot fo time wiht my parents, and have simply met some of
God’s very best people on the planet.

On the sad side, I have seen Kibera, the largest slum in Kenya. I’ve
seen people living in heartbreaking poverty with no electricity,
running water, or sewer systems. I’ve observed women and children
walking long miles to gather firewood to cook what I’m sure are
meager meals.

Please pray for the people in Africa and for the government in Kenya
will be able to find new ways to help it’s people and that corrupt
government officials would come to true repentance. Please continue
to pray for me as well since next week will begin five days of
sermons and at least one more concert here on the campus of ANU for
the students. There is a need for revival among these young people
and I sense the staff as well. I know that I don’t bring revival, I
just pray that God will use me as His mouthpiece to deliver words
that need to be heard.

Blessings,
Rick L. James

Raising Funds For Africa Trip - April 4, 2008

that our God thinks globally. The sole purpose we, as Christians, are
still here on this planet is to bring the name of Jesus to every
tribe, tongue, and nation. God's heart aches for people to know Him.
I encourage you to ask the Lord for His heart and burden for the
people of this world. When we receive a global vision like God's,
somehow everything about life appears much different.

I cannot make this trip without the support of good people like you.
I would be honored if you would pray about what God would have you do
in support of this trip. Since my income is made from my concert
ministry here at home, being away on this trip for two weeks means
that my income here at home will stop. In addition, I project that
the total cost of this two week trip including airfare will be a
little over $2000. While I won't be leaving until September, I have
to buy tickets, get vaccinations, and make other preparations very
soon.
Ideally, I would like to raise my support through my concert
ministries, but as of now all of the money I am receiving is just
barely covering my expenses here at home. I need your prayer and
financial support as the Lord leads you. If you decide you would like
to support this upcoming trip there are several ways you can do so.
Some of you may like to help me raise support by having me in for a
house concert or a weekend meeting at your church where I can share
more about Africa and the work going on there. Some of you who like a
no hassle way to give online can simply to go to my one of my web
sites (www.rickjamesmusic.net or www.myspace.com/rickjamesmusic), hit
the donate button, and send money securely through Paypal. Still
others may like to send support through the mail in the form of a
check. Still more, many of you, like me, may not have a lot of extra
cash to give, but you can still give most valuable assistance of all
to this trip. You can pray with all your heart that God will give me
not only the resources needed, but the words to speak and the songs to
share with the people of Nairobi.
Financially, all it takes to pay for my trip is a commitment of 100
people to pay $20.00! You are a vital part of the work of this
ministry in Africa this summer. The Lord has designed it so that we
would work as a body, depending on each part to accomplish what that
body was created to do. I appreciate your prayers and support more
then you know.

If you would like to support me in this exciting opportunity, please
make your checks out to [Rick James], with [Africa] in the memo. This
will ensure that your check gets into my trip account.

Send checks to:
First Church of the Nazarene
Attn. Rick James
901 E. Home Road
Springfield, OH 45503

You may also make a donation using Paypal online at
www.rickjamesmusic.net or www.myspace.com/rickjamesmusic. Please not
on the online donation form that the donation is for the Africa trip
unless you intend for you donation to be used for my regular music
ministry.

Thank you for your time, energy, and support.
May God Bless and keep you and make His face shine upon you.
In His Service,
Rick James

Jim Wallis Quote, "Was Jesus A Politician?" - March 6, 2008

Was Jesus a Politician? (by Jim Wallis)
Last Friday I was in Santa Barbara, California, to speak at Westmont College - where even on a Friday evening, the gymnasium was packed with students. Before that event I did an interview with The Santa Barbara Independent, a local weekly newspaper, which they titled The Next Great Awakening? One of the questions the reporter asked was, "Do you think Jesus was a politician?" Here is my answer:

Of course not. But he had a vision of the Kingdom of God which was spiritual, personal, relational, social, economic, and yes, political - because it talked about allegiances and loyalties and authority, and if Jesus was Lord, Caesar was not. His confrontation that he provoked in Jerusalem was with the religious and the political leaders. They saw him as a political threat. If they saw him just as a private pietist, why would they worry? [If he was] helping people get their lives together, helping their marriages, making them better parents and make them go to less Roman orgies and drunken parties, why would that have been a threat to the ruling powers? They regarded him as a threat. I remember I was at Wheaton College once and I asked this class, "Why was Jesus killed?" and they had no idea. They just couldn't comprehend the question. And then one young student said, "Well, to save us from our sins." And I said, "So you think Pontius Pilate was sitting there thinking, 'How am I going to save these American evangelicals from their sins? I'm gonna kill this guy and that will do it.'" Albeit that our theological understanding of the cross and our redemption — I'm orthodox on all those questions, but he was killed because he was seen as a threat to the rulers both religious and political. In the book I talk about how Jesus confronted the major political options of his day. All four of them were there, they're always there: One was collaborationist, one was pietist, one was withdrawn — you know, the kind of counter culture — and one was political insurrection, or revolutionary violence. He confronted them all, he rejected them all. There was a fifth option called the Kingdom of God, and that's our option.

Advent - November 26, 2007

Advent is a time of great anticipation and joy in preparation for the celebration of Christ’s arrival in Bethlehem as an infant. In the Western tradition, Advent begins four Sundays prior to December 25th. The four weeks of Advent are often thought of as symbolizing four of the different ways that Christ comes into the world: (1) at his birth as a helpless infant in Bethlehem; (2) at his arrival in the hearts of believers; (3) at his death; (4) at his arrival on Judgment Day.

The apostle Paul challenges us to wake from our sleep and live worthy godly in expectation of the coming messiah. His words should be taken to heart this Advent season as we seek the savior who is and was and is to come. “You know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now that when we first became believers; the night is gone, the day is near. Let us lay aside then the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; let us live honorable as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarreling and jealousy. Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ”. (Romans 13: 11-14)

May Christ be our alarm clock as we make our way through this holiday season in expectation of his coming.

In Christ,
Rick James

Thomas Merton Quote - October 2, 2007

The big problem that confront's Chrsitianity is not Christ's enemies. Persecution has never done much harm to the inner life of the Church as such. The real religious problem exists in the souls of those of us who in their hearts believe in God, and recognize their obligation to love Him and serve Him--yet do not!

A modern America city is not altogether a propitious place in which to try and love God. And you cannot come to know Him unless you have a little time and a little peace in which to pray and think about Him and study His truth. Time and peace are not easily come by in this civilization of ours. And so those who profess to serve God are often forced to get along without either, and sacrifice their hopes of an interior life. But how far can one go in this sacrifice before it ceases to be a sacrifice and becomes a prevarication? The truth is, we are simply not permitted to devote ourselves to God without at the same time leading an interior life.
--Thomas Merton "The Ascent To Truth" pg.2

Writer's Workshops, House Concerts, and Times of Renewal - September 6, 2007

www.rickjamesmusic.net
Greetings in Christ Jesus,

I hope that you have all had a terrific week and are getting ready for a great weekend. I am looking forward to leading music at the First Church of the Nazarene in Springfield Ohio this coming week during their renewal services. Reverend John Donnerburg of Lubbock Texas will be preaching at each service and if you are in the area I encourage you to attend. Reverend Donnerburg has made a great impact on my life through his preaching and I am looking forward to a great time in the Lord with him and the people of First Nazarene this week.

This Saturday I will be playing again at the Upper Valley Mall in Springfield Ohio for “Springfield’s Got Talent”. It should be a fun day filled with singers, dancers, comedians, and other musicians. I hope to see you there. I have been informed that I will be closing out the show on Saturday night so see you around 8pm.

It looks like September is going to be a pretty busy month for me and I am thankful to God for it. I am still trying to book a concert on Sunday the 16th somewhere within a 3 hour drive from Terre Haute Indiana. I will be the presiding minister at the wedding of Riley Scott Buttry and Laura Smiley on Saturday the 15th and would love to minister somewhere in that area on Sunday morning if possible.

Be watching my web site www.rickjamesmusic.net for the exact dates on upcoming songwriting workshops that I will be leading. Right now it looks like I will be leading the first one at “Un Mundo Cafe” in Springfield Ohio on Saturday morning the 29th of September. Bring your portable instrument of choice (no pipe organs please), a pad of paper, and let’s write. It is a free workshop but a $5 donation is suggested and appreciated.

I am also booking fall and winter holiday concerts renewal services, songwriting workshops, and retreats at this time. October is starting to fill up. I am also beginning to schedule some home concerts which I would love to give you more details about if you are interested. It is a great way to have an intimate concert in your home and share the gospel and good times with friends, in your homes.

Also, if you are having a concert at your church with a major artist and are looking for an independent but professional opening act with experience, please consider me. I have opened for many Christian artists including Ginny Owens, Lisa Bevil, and Sarah Masen.

I praise God for the way He was been opening doors and providing for this ministry. I really could not be doing what I am doing without your support (both emotional and monetary), love, and prayers. You are an incredible group of fans and I am so glad to have you as my companions on this journey through the Kingdom of God, both in this life and the next. Please drop me a line sometime or leave a message on my guestbook. I love hearing from you.

In His Glad Service,

Rick James

Rick James Music Update August 26th, 2007 - August 26, 2007

“Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Ephesians 5:19-20

Greetings in Christ Jesus,

Pondering the ideas of singing and making music in your heart is interesting. Truly there are times when singing, making music and giving thanks to God may be hard to accomplish because of the demands that life puts on us. The times when we find it difficult to sing praises are the times when we need it the most. This time of year can be stressful for many. Going back to school, returning from vacations, and changing with the seasons can affect us in many different ways. My prayer for you is that you will always be able to find a God song in your heart as we learn to speak to Him and each other in ways that are pleasing to our Father’s ears.

There are some exciting things happening here on the Rick James Front. I am thrilled that I will get to be a part of “Holiness Week” in Nairobi, Kenya on the Campus of Africa Nazarene University in September of 2007. I would appreciate your prayers as I begin making preparations for this trip.

Also, I want to say thank you to all of my fans. My song "You Are
There With Me" has now been voted up to #3 on the fan faves chart at
www.indieheaven.com. It has less than a week to go but with your
help, I believe it will go to number one. I have been getting a lot of response to this song both over the internet and at live shows. Please take some time to vote for it daily if you are able. Thanks for your amazing support!

Very soon www.christianmixinet.com will begin playing "You Are There
With Me" and "A Little Lower Than The Angels" on their radio station.
They are one of the largest Internet Christian music stations on
Live365. They are also a Christian Radio Weekly "Indie Reporter". I encourage you to visit their site and request my music. There is some
talk that I will be interviewed live on their station if all goes well
in the coming days.

Finally, I still have a few dates open in September and I am
especially trying to get some bookings in the Greenville, South
Carolina/ Nashville, Tennesee areas for September 19th-30th. I am
also booking fall and winter holiday concerts renewal services,
songwriting workshops, and retreats at this time. I am also beginning to schedule some home concerts which I would love to give you more details about if you are interested. It is a great way to have an intimate concert in your home and share the gospel and good times with friends, in your homes.

This is a ministry, and above all my thanks and praise goes to God, however I could not be doing this ministry without your support (both emotional and monetary), votes and prayers. I have an incredible group of fans and I am so glad to have you as my companions on this journey through the Kingdom of God, both in this life and the next.

God Bless,
Rick James

Rick James Music Update August 7th, 2007 - August 7, 2007

Happy August Everyone,

Y.A.C. was a terrific week again this year. I was humbled to see how many teenagers made decisions to follow Christ with their lives and be sold out to Him this year. I'd like to thank New Covenant for being not only great musicians to play with but for having servant hearts for Christ. You guys ministered to me. Let's play together again soon.

This past Sunday at Middletown Indiana was incredible. We worshipped together and enjoyed the presence of the Lord. Sunday Night in Anderson Indiana was the same way. Indiana Christians must have a passion for worship. Thank you for the generous love offerings and gracious hearts. Much love.

This Sunday I turn 30 and will once again be featured on the home page of www.indieheaven.com. Please check out my song "You Are There With Me" with is currently at number 17 on the fan faves chart at www.indieheaven.com/fanfaves.php. You can vote for it once a day by clicking on the fifth star next to the song.

To celebrate my 30th birthday I will be playing two concerts in Toledo Ohio. I hope to see as many of you there as possible. The music festival in the afternoon should be awesome. Bring a friend and come on out.

Lastly, I am still trying to add some more concert dates to my September and October schedule. August is filling up pretty good but I still may be able to squeeze in a couple of dates. If any of you can help me out it would be much appreciated.

God Bless,
Rick James

NYC 2007 - July 16, 2007

Blessings in Christ,
I just got back from NYC (Nazarene Youth Conference). It was such a pleasure to spend a week worshiping and growing in Christ with 10,000 teens and adult sponsors from the USA and Canada. We sensed the presence of the Lord in mighty ways and we were all challenged to be what we say we are. It was my privilege to get to know many people for the first time and to form deeper bond with already established relationships. I praise God for what he is doing and I pray for our teenagers that they will continue to follow Christ with their lives, living in the power of His water, fire, and wind.

Also, thanks for making my song a hit. It is now up to number 7 on the www.indieheaven.com fan faves chart. I want to remind you that you can vote once a day and there are only a few more days left to take "A Little Lower Than The Angels" to number one! Tell your friends, your family, pets, and transforming robotic cars to get out and vote!

Also, I still have a few more concert dates available in August and many more in September and beyond. Feel free to contact me at www.rickjamesmusic.net.

Blessings In Christ,
Rick James

Opening up to the Holy Spirit - June 12, 2007

I’ve been thinking a lot about Pentecost lately and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the believer’s in the upper room in Jerusalem. There are a lot of things that we can say about Acts chapter 2. Many people want to say that it is supposed to be taken literally and other seem to think that the passage should be taken as a metaphor, but what few of us dare to do is actually experience the power of the Holy Spirit for ourselves. We conjecture about what the Spirit’s power is, we read about it, teach about it, but it is something that must be experienced.

To experience the Spirit’s power is to come to Christ open handed and to be overpowered. It is to allow the Holy Spirit of God to invade us in the very center of our being. It is to allow the Spirit to see what we would rather leave unseen and to touch what we would rather not have touched. There will always be evidence that the Holy Spirit is in control of our lives. Spirit filled people are marked with a power that even people with all the powers of the kingdoms of the world do not have. And that power will always lead us outside of the walls of our churches to serve others and live like Christ.

Do we dare allow God’s Spirit to invade our congregation? Do we dare allow this untamed God to rearrange every part of our lives? Do we dare allow the spotlight of God to search our souls and change what it finds there? Do we dare to not open ourselves to the Holy Spirit?

“It requires a confession that you are limited, dependent, weak, and even sinful. Whenever you pray, you profess that you are not God, nor do you want to be God, that you haven’t reached your goal yet, and that you never will reach it in this life, and that you must constantly stretch out your hands and wait for the gift of life. This attitude is difficult because it make you vulnerable.” -- Henri J. M. Nouwen
